Types of Lamination Equipment – Simplified

There are many types of Lamination Equipment available. Each laminator has an application that it’s best suited for.

Laminators that use hot lamination are the most common and readily available. The equipment applies heat to the laminate to adhere it to the paper stock. The process of hot lamination provides a crystal clear finished product with no wrinkling or bubbling in the laminate.

Cold lamination applies pressure to the adhesive laminate to bind the film to the paper stock.

Education 25″ Roll Laminator – Able to laminate up to 25″ wide and up to 5 mil thick laminate.

Pouch Lamination

Laminating pouches are pockets of laminate material which the paper stock slips into. When the pouch travels through the equipment the heat seals the pouch to the material. Pouch Lamination applications are designed for moderate in-home or office use.

It is highly suggested to use a “carrier” when laminating. A carrier holds the pouch as it goes through the equipment. This helps keeps the laminator clean and the pouch from accidentally wrapping around the rollers. The carrier is typically included with your equipment purchase.

What you need to know to order Pouch Laminate:

Size – Pouches come in a variety of sizes. The pouch doesn’t have to be the same size as the material being laminated. Many sizes are available in order to avoid trimming. Our most common sizes are letter and legal.
Thickness – The “mil” is the thickness of the pouch. The higher the mil thickness, the more rigid the product will be after being laminated.

Film Lamination

Film laminate or Roll Laminate provides strength and durability to any project. Roll lamination equipment uses 2 rolls of laminate – one on the top bar or mandrel and one on the bottom mandrel. When the material is fed through the machine the laminate is heated and adheres to the paper stock for a crystal clear glossy finish.

Roll laminate comes in different sizes, thickness and core sizes. The most common core size is 1″.

What you need to know to order Roll Laminate:

Size – Film laminate is ordered by the width X mil thickness X length. Coronado Binding Systems offers laminate in 12″, 18″, 25″ and 27″ widths. The most common lengths are 250′ or 500′.
Thickness – Roll laminate comes in a variety of thicknesses. The greater the mil, the more rigid the final laminated product will be. The most common mil thickness for film laminate is 1.5 mil, 3 mil, 5 mil, 7 mil or 10 mil.

What is Pro-Bind Thermal Binding?

Thermal Binders provide a polished and finished perfect bound look to all bound documents.The thermal adhesive glue is pre-applied to the spine for easy binding. No punching, crimping or clean up!

How It Works! Its as simple at 1…2…3…

1. Square up the loose sheets and place in the thermal cover. Jog the papers so that they rest completely in the book, flush against the back spine.
2. Place the thermal cover in the Pro-Bind 1000. Be certain that the spine is flat against the heating plate.
3. Push the start button. When the audible tone sounds, remove the thermal cover and immediately place in the cooling rack.

Coronado Binding Systems has hired Kenneth Yoder as a Service Technician in the Kansas City metro area. Yoder will provide on-site technical service to our existing equipment fleet and simple trouble shooting tips to our customers. He will also be instrumental leader in inventory procurement and management.

Yoder brings with him a degree of Applied Science in Electronics and Computer Technology. He has extensive experience with troubleshooting electrical and mechanical components, electrical schematics and repairing circuits. Coronado Binding Systems is excited to provide our customers with quicker and more extensive equipment service with the hire of Yoder.

Copy Tab Printing Tips & Tricks

Copy Tabs provided quick and easy personalization of your text printing. Networking the printer to your computers is more difficult that creating and printing copy tabs!

- Even though paper seems to be tough on the outside it actually is sensitive. Keep copy tabs stored in a cool dry place until ready to use. Humidity can play havoc on the tabs and therefore play havoc when running through your printer. Try to not touch the tab print surface area. Skin oils can affect the way the ink toner adheres to the paper. To ensure the best print quality keep equipment clean and dust free – this is provide streak-free and clear printing.

- For best layout – be sure to type only in areas marked “Safe Print Area”. Typing in the dangerous areas could results in words being left out and sentences not making sense. Be sure to use and save a separate original template for each tab.

Powis Parker Announces the Fastback Model 20

Amist all of the endless snow here in Kansas City we received something pretty awesome in the mail this week. A flyer for Powis Parker’s all new Fastback Model 20. From what we can tell it looks like a pretty darn impressive thermal binding machine.

It has a larger LCD display to guide the user through binding their project step by step. Each step is shown with interactive animated illustrations. Perfect for the office where someone can jump on and access the machine using the walk through instructions so that that those “multiple trainings” that we all know and love will be a thing of the past.

3:1 Wire vs. 2:1 Wire – Which is right for you?

The right type of wire element to purchase is typically dictated by the type of punch you have. There are two types of wire punch patterns:

3:1 has a total of 32 holes along the 11” edge of the sheet. This equals 3 holes per 1 inch.
2:1 has a total of 21 holes along the 11” edge of the sheet. This equals 2 holes per 1 inch.

The wire elements cannot be interchanged between the punching dies. If the equipment has a 2:1 punching die – only 2:1 wire will fit the punching pattern and will be able to successfully bind the book. Likewise, if the punching equipment has a 3:1 die – only 3:1 wire elements will effectively complete the project.

2:1 wire is ultimately used for thicker books, but is able to bind spine sizes starting 1/4” (45 sheets of 20# bond) to 1-1/4” (250 sheets of 20# bond). 3:1 wire is the more common punch pattern and is able to punch sizes 1/4” (25 sheets of 20# bond) to 9/16” (125 sheets of 20# bond).
